FIT TO YOU

We believe that getting strong and healthy should follow a few simple ideas and guidelines. Let us explore what fitness means to us and how it might help you with your climbing or other fitness goals. Here’s how:

Fitness can be

Strong

Relative to the activity.

Strength is the ability to withstand great force or pressure. We are made to adapt to the stimulus that we are presented. Our fitness training should incorporate mental obstacles as well as physical obstacles to prepare us for that which we train. Strength may refer to the ability to maintain posture through an ultra-endurance event, or it may mean maintaining structural integrity through a maximal effort movement. Mentally our training should introduce strengthening tactics that allow us to understand various needs of our activity such as producing maximal efforts or maintaining concentration through the duration of a movement of event.

INDIVIDUALIZED

All training and practice need to be specific to the person.

A “training plan” is the base and should be adapted to the needs of the individual. Considerations may be – time to dedicate to training, extrinsic and intrinsic needs of training, consideration for stress beyond the coaching session or workout, physical modifications due to imbalances, past injuries, age, and body composition.

MINDFUL MOVEMENT

Simply stated, practice.

Movement integration and motor learning is one of the most important aspects to expressing ourselves physically. Movements should be integrated with breath, attention, and visualization. This approach is true from Power lifting competitions to 50ks, from three move boulder problems to 1000 ft. ice routes.

PASSION-BASED

Training should be for something.

General fitness as a concept will only get you so far. Beyond that, motivation and need are dictated per the goal of training. This does mean we should get bogged down in complexities. Passion does not have to be event/sport specific, they can be expressed as simply as leading as healthy a life as possible, healing from an injury, or changing the way you look.

LEARN

How to do it yourself, and to be better.

The process should educate you. The process should teach you about yourself, teach you about health and lifestyle, and teach you how to carry on your own training so that you no longer must rely on another to lead you.

EFFICIENT

Don’t waste your time “fitnessing.”

Training should not take up all your time. The minimal amount needed to produce an adaption is the best amount. Time is important for expression of our passions, and the needs of life beyond our passions.

Meet the coaches

Jim Guarnaccio

has had a lifelong interest in movement. Studying the Martial Arts for most of his life has brought an appreciation for discipline, health, and compassion for others and their bodies. His martial journey brought him to climbing and he has been climbing for over 10 years. In recent years he has received his CSCS certification for Strength and Conditioning training, FMS-2 (Functional Movement Screen), FRCms, and has gone through a plethora of other training certifications and classes in the past. Jim is also a Precision Nutrition Level 1 nutrition coach in order to integrate a more holistic approach to helping others. Jim also has a passion for helping others shine in their non-climbing pursuits be it strength training, endurance sports, and other health and wellness approaches.

Craig Carey

Craig Carey

started climbing eight years ago after a childhood spent playing baseball and rugby. He has spent the last eight years pursuing climbing movement, technique, and mobility in order to achieve outdoor pursuits. For six years, Craig lived and climbed out of Colorado, where he fell in love with outdoor bouldering. During those years, Craig spent many months climbing all around the United States. He joined the Adventure Rock Routesetting team in 2022. While mostly a boulderer, Craig focuses on building a movement base, mobility, and tactics as a platform for progressing in all climbing disciplines.

Parker C. Bio Picture

Parker

has been an avid climber for several years and during that time has had a focus in bouldering and some sport climbing. During this time he has found a passion for outdoor bouldering. In August of 2021, he became a coach for the Adventure Rock Climbing Team’s competition branch where he has had the privilege to work with some of the strongest youth climbers in Wisconsin. Parker has also been a routesetter at Adventure Rock since early 2022. He specializes in refining climbing movement as well as tactics on the wall to improve strength and power. Whether it’s sending hard in the gym, competitions, or hard projects outside, Parker is well equipped to help you achieve your climbing goals.

Jacob Bach

has been a climber since 2014. From the first day he walked into Adventure Rock he fell in love with the community and the movement of climbing. In March 2018 he accepted a position on the coaching staff for Adventure Rock Climbing Team, where he is currently the Teen Team and Youth 1 coach. Jacob’s fitness journey started in a 13-year dance study, which he now uses in his climbing movement work. He is always studying and growing in knowledge of the human body, conditioning, and mobility. Jacob loves to work with all disciplines of climbing (Bouldering, Sport, Speed).
